We continue with the story of Andrew Carnegie. Who was his right-hand man, the king of cox, and what happened at the Homestead factory?
We approve of everything you do. We'll be with you till the end...
🍚 King of koxu Frick
A conservative in heart and spirit. He believed that the price of labor should follow the trend of rising and falling prices of final goods. He was also nicknamed the King of Coke because his coke ovens accounted for as much as 80% of the total production of the substance in the state of Pennsylvania.
💸 Corruption without guilt
Frick bore complicity in the Johnstown flood incident. As many as 2,200 people died in the flood, yet Frick and his accomplices managed to avoid any prosecution. It is a tragic but interesting example of the corruption and arrogance of the powerful and wealthy.
⚒ Homestead Massacre
Frick was in charge of the operation of the Homestead Steel Mill, which became the infamous scene of the Homestead Massacre during his tenure as boss. Homestead was the most modern of all the steel mills in Carnegie's portfolio. Except it was unique in that it was ruled by a union...
👨🔧 Human labour as a commodity
A commodity whose price should have been minimized like every other cost. The idea that workers had any stake in the success or even the management of the company was absurd and unacceptable to many.
😐 No impact
Frick built a wall around the factory and announced to the workers that the company would no longer bargain with unions, but only with individual workers. In doing so, he took away any collective power and influence from them.
🏹 Shot and working
Frick had two gunshot wounds in the neck and still did not go home but finished his full day's work, at the end of which he wrote to Carnegie not to go home, that he would take care of the strike even if it cost him his life.
