After a year of independent management, the joint trade of Tomáš and his siblings was indebted by an amount that exceeded the company's assets 90 times. The 19-year-old Tomas Bata had already experienced the worst at such a young age.
The difference between the common man and Tomas Bata is that instead of wringing his hands, Tomas realised that the capitalists were actually right. He is the one who borrowed money from them and did not use it economically.
📉 He considered bankruptcy a moral death.
He decided that he would do whatever it took to survive. Even if it meant giving up the dream of being a master and a member of a better society. He realized that he is the one who makes others pay for his mistakes.
🔨 The factory worker with big dreams became a craftsman again.
He kept his sewing machine in the back of his workshop. That way he could see whoever was coming into the shop, but whoever was coming in couldn't see him. No one was to witness his deep fall to manual labor. But by manual labor his wealth soon equaled his debts.
🔚 Koditsch and Company supply company collapses.
Tomas did not worry about it, he forbade his brother to sign any promissory notes at the war, but it was too late. The debt was doubled to 20,000 gold pieces. Although the debt was larger than the first, he was able to get out of it quite quickly. He had a business and, most importantly, moral credit.
👞"Bat'ovka" - the first real success.
Serially produced model of canvas shoes with leather toe. Their low selling price, small cost and simplicity made them the perfect product. Thanks to them, Tomáš became the second richest man in Zlín.
🥊 A hostile attitude towards industrialization.
The current high demand for "classic cobblers" caused Tomas to reject machines that would impose honest manual work. On the way to Frankfurt he saw for the first time in his life machines that could do any shoemaker's job and could fill his "big" order a thousand times over. However, the machines were beyond his means at the time and so he bought only a few useful hand tools.
6⃣8⃣8⃣ questions about production.
Tomas went to America to study. He wrote down a list of questions about manufacturing that he wanted to find answers to. But the real discovery for him was the possibility of developing human powers under the influence of freedom and competition.
